Balaena sp.

Fragment of rib from a whale. The whole bone is highly polished. This is typical of bone from the Red Crag Nodule Bed. The surface of the bone has number of dents and grooves. Some of these are probably piddock boring activity. Others might be from a shark attack. The giant extinct shark, Carcarocles megalodon fed primarily on whales and is its teeth are regularly found in the same beds.
