TWO ACANTHODES GRACILIS - PERMIAN, CZECH REPUBLIC.

Acanthodes gracilis Beyrich

Large rectangular slab of black shale. On one surface are two complete Acanthodians lying next to each other. The Acanthodians were spiny sharks that fed primarily on plankton. They became extinct at the end of the Permian. Both fish show the characteristic covering of tiny scales and both show fin support spines. Superb detail under magnification.  Repair running right across the middle of the matrix does not detract from a really fine piece. These Permian Acanthodians from the Czech Republic are very difficult to come by.

Permian, Rotliegendes, Libstat Formation.
Kundralill Doly, Kostalv, Podkrkonose - Senke, Czech Republic.

Matrix : 23 x 12 x 0.7cm.
Largest fish : 11.5 cm. long.
