TRICERATOPS SKULL BONE - CRETACEOUS, SOUTH DAKOTA, U.S.A.

Triceratops horridus Marsh.

Thick wedge shaped bone. On the outer edge the bone has a honeycomb like texture with numerous pores. On a Triceratops  skull this feature is seen most obviously on a bone known as the jugal which is on the edge at the base and towards the rear. The curved outer edge with one flat surface would support this determination. The only other area on the skull to show this honeycomb surface is the very base of the supraorbital horn immediately above the eye socket. I think this is from the jugal. Interesting, unusual and rarely offered item.

Upper Cretaceous, Maastrichtian, Hell Creek Formation.
Ziebach County, South Dakota, U.S.A

Bone : 7 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm.
