TEMNODONTOSAURUS PADDLE BONES - JURASSIC, YORKSHIRE.

Temnodontosaurus cf crassimanus (Blake,1876)

Two paddle bones from the fore fin of a very large Ichthyosaur. Beach find from an old Victorian collection. The label with it says Plesiosaur bones but this is incorrect. The larger complete bone is either the radius or the radial bone. The smaller bone, although incomplete shows the very characteristic 'notch' on the outer edge which is typical of the first few carpal bones of Temnodontosaurus. There is a second species, Temnodontosaurus  acutirostris (Owen, 1840) but on sheer size alone these bones are much more likely to have come from T. Crassimanus.  Old vertebrate pieces like this with a good provenance from the Yorkshire Lias are rarely offered for sale.

Jurassic, Toarcian, Falciferum Zone.
Sandsend, near Whitby, Yorkshire.

Specimen : 16cm. long.
