TAPIR FOOTBONE SHOWING PATHOLOGY / BITE - PLEISTOCENE, FLORIDA.

Tapirus veroensis Sellards 1918)

Complete metapodial foot bone from an adult tapir. At the distal end there is a ragged circular hole in the bone. This may just be some form of bone pathology. It could ,on the other hand be the result of a bite from a canine tooth of a large feline of which a Jaguar would be the most likely. Interesting specimen.

Late Pleistocene, Rancholabrean.

Withlacoochee River, Marion County, Florida.

Bone : 11 cm long.
