SUPERB MICROBRACHIUS DICKI - DEVONIAN, ORKNEY, SCOTLAND.

Microbrachius dicki (Traquair)

Microbrachia was an exceptionally small example of a type of primitive fish known as an Arthrodire (Placoderm). These fish had a fused armoured plate consisting of the head and body of the animal. There most amazing feature, however, was the spectacular pair of modified pectoral fins. These were more like limbs and articulated on either side of the front of the shield. They must have acted as a mobility aid for the fish. This specimen is complete. The tail area is unarmoured and does not preserve. The fused shield shows numerous plates under magnification. Both the modified pectoral 'limbs' are present. The left one even shows a series of tiny spines on the outer edge under magnification. I have never had one of these for sale in over 36 years in the business. This is very much a specialist collector's item.

Devonian, Givetian, Eday beds.
Rousay, Orkney, Scotland.

Fish 2.1 cm. long.
