SEA PEN - OLIGOCENE, AUSTRALIA

Graphularia robinae   (McCoy)

Sea pens belong to the subclass Octocorallia and are exceedingly rare as fossils. They are characterised by a primary polyp producing a barren stalk which anchors the blade-like polyp leaves. Famous Pennatulaceans include Charniodiscus from the Pre-Cambrian.  Matrix free 'stalk'. Highly unusual item!
