SAUROPOD VERTEBRA - CRETACEOUS, ISLE OF WIGHT.

Sauropod. indeterminate.

A very large matrix free vertebra from a sauropod Dinosaur.  All the faces are intact. The bone is beautifully preserved. There are no obvious processes but the vertebra is still a substantial size. This might suggest it is post sacral and is one of the first of the caudal vertebrae. At least four different groups of Sauropods are recorded from the Isle of Wight - Camarosaurids, Titanosaurids, Brachiosaurids and Diplodocoids. Without associated skeletal material it is not possible to put a name to an isolated vertebra. A really impressive British Dinosaur piece.

Cretaceous, Wealden, Wessex Formation.
Brook Bay, Isle of Wight.

Vertebra : 16 x 12 x 10 cm.
