SAUROPOD TAIL VERTEBRA WITH BITE MARKS - JURASSIC, OXFORDSHIRE.

Duriatitan humerocristatus (Hulke, 1874)

Caudal vertebra from a huge Sauropod. Matrix free. At the margin of one of the two end faces are a series of three parallel grooves. These are teeth drag marks from a predator. These could have been inflicted either whilst alive, or, as a carcass by a Carnosaur (Megalosaurid) whilst the Sauropod was still on land. Alternatively, the Sauropod carcass could have been swept into the sea and then fed on by either Pliosaurs or Crocodiles. Nice interesting example.

Jurassic, Kimmeridge Clay.
Oday, Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Vertebra : 9 x 8.5 x 5.3 cm.
