OPPELIA WITH TWO CIRCULAR HOLES IN THE SHELL - JURASSIC, DORSET.

Oppelia subradiata (Sowerby, 1823)

Matrix free specimen. Towards the end of the outer whorl on one side there are two roughly circular holes lying next to each other. The shape and size would suggest a bite from a marine reptile (Crocodile, Plesiosaur, Pliosaur or Ichthyosaur). Another possibility is that they were bored by a predatory Gastropod. Interesting specimen.

Jurassic, Bajocian, Sauzei Zone.

Burton Bradstock, Dorset.
