'MOTTLED 'MEG' TOOTH - MIOCENE, SOUTH CAROLINA, USA.

Otodus (Megaselachus) megalodon Agassiz. 1843.

Fine tooth from an extinct giant shark. These fearsome sharks were the apex predators at the time. The blade shows strong serrations along both edges. The slight 'nick' out of the tooth towards the base on one side is almost certainly a result of the shark biting it's own teeth during a feeding frenzy.Mottled various shades of grey.

Miocene, Helvetian.
Cooper River, South Carolina, USA.

Tooth : 5 cm tall.
