Mammuthus primigenius Blumenbach

​​​​​​​Part of the tusk of an adult Mammoth. At wither end the typical 'cross - hatched' structure of the layering of the tusk can be seen to perfection. The two holes on the inside of the tusk are made by Piddocks - a bivalve that bores into wood, soft rock and other organic material on the sea bed.

Pleistocene, Devensian.
​​​​​​​Dredged from the Brown Bank, North Sea off Lowestoft.  

Tusk : 17.5 cm long.
