Osteolepis panderi (Pander 1861)

Square block of grey flagstone with a complete fish covered in black shiny scales. The lobe finned fish known as (Crossopterygians) were the direct ancestors of the first Amphibians. Nice detail under magnification.

Devonian, Eifelian, Lower Caithness Flagstone Group. Hams-Skarfskerry Subgroup.
Skinnet, hill of Forrs, south of Thurso, Caithness, Scotland.

Fish : 8.5 cm long.
