Osteolepis macrolepidotus (Agassiz, 1835)

Osteolepis belong to a group of fish known as Crossopterygians. These were ancestral to the very first Amphibians. This complete fish shows very unusual scales with delicate surface ornamentation. This is in sharp contrast to the usual jet black shiny plain scales seen on most specimens. Two explanations have been put forward for these particular fish. One is that they are simply sexually immature individuals. The second explanation is that this is just a seasonal feature with the scales changing later on. Either way, Osteolepis exhibiting this feature are not at all common (or are simply overlooked).

Middle Devonian, Eifelian, Sandwick Fish Bed.
Tronston, Orkney.

Fish : 11 cm long.
