ICHTHYOSAUR VERTEBRA WITH PUNCTURE WOUND - JURASSIC, GLOUCESTERSHIRE.

Ichthyosaurus cf. communis - De la Beche & Conybeare.

Matrix free vertebra from an Ichthyosaur. As it was found in river gravels it is slightly water worn. Along the top edge is a 1 x 0.8 cm puncture wound. This is either most likely from another Ichthyosaur scavenging on a carcase due to the unusual position of the bite. Ichthyosaur remains from the Severn Vale are rare.

Jurassic, Lower Lias, Lower Sinemurian.
Twyning, Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.

Vertebra : 5.5 x 4.6 x 1.8cm.
