ICHTHYOSAUR VERTEBRA WITH ONE FACE COVERED IN OYSTER SPAT - JURASSIC, OXFORDSHIRE.

Brachypterygius extremus Boulenger.

Pristine matrix free Ichthyosaur vertebra. In beautiful condition and showing lovely detail. One of the end faces is absolutely covered in oyster 'spat' and worms. The vertebra must have laid on the sea floor and acted as an attachment point for a host of oysters to grow on the exposed surface.  Really unusual.

Jurassic, Kimmeridge Clay.
Oday, Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Vertebra : 8 x 7.5 x 3 cm.
