Brachypterygius extremus Boulenger.

The surangular bone sits at the bottom edge at the extreme proximal end of the lower jaw of an Ichthyosaur. It is rare for it to be preserved as an isolated bone. The bone shows clearly the grooves of three large sinuse for blood vessels. In good condition. Incomplete but unusual and rare.

Jurassic, Kimmeridge Clay.
Dredged from the Smallmouth Sands off Weymouth Harbour, Dorset.

Bone : 7 x 4.7 x 1.5 cm.
