ICHTHYOSAUR HUMERUS WITH BITE MARK - JURASSIC, SOMERSET.

Ichthyosaurus cf. communis De la Beche & Conybeare.

Matrix free humerus from a medium sized Ichthyosaur. Along the distal edge where it would have articulated with the radius and ulna bones there is an elliptical depressed area of bone. This has to be a bite mark from another reptile ( almost certainly another Ichthyosaur ). The bone is a pale pinkish colour. This is very typical preservation for all the Ichthyosaurs found in and around Street in Somerset. All the classic 'old' quarries are long gone. This was just a chance isolated find off a field. Street reptile material is virtually impossible to obtain these days.

Jurassic, Lower Lias. Lower Sinemurian.
Street, Somerset.

Bone : 14 x 11 x 5cm.
