HORSE JAW WITH THREE TEETH - PLEISTOCENE, NORTH SEA.

Equus sp.

The front half of the lower left jaw of an ice Age horse with three pristine perfect molars still in position. Lovely preservation and detail. The nomenclature of the late Pleistocene European horses is quite complicated. The more robust specimens in the past have been included in the so called 'Caballine' Horses, Equus caballus. The more gracile forms tend to be included in the modern species Equus ferus. Really good display specimen.

Pleistocene, Devensian.
Dredged from the Brown Bank, North sea off Lowestoft.

Jaw : 23 cm. long.
