HORSE 'CANNON BONE' SHOWING PATHOLOGY - PLEISTOCENE, HUNGARY.

Equus cf. caballus Linné.

Complete 'cannon bone' or Metatarsal from the lower leg of a Pleistocene horse. One of the two 'splint bones' or vestigial metatarsals II and IV has been fused along most of its length with only the final section being free of the cannon bone. The other splinter bone is missing altogether as the proximal end of the bone is damaged at that point. This fusion of the bones is very unusual and represents some sort of pathology or injury during life.

Pleistocene, Devensian.
Bugay, Pest district, Hungary.

Bone : 28cm. long.
