Harpoceras falciferum Sowerby

Matrix free Ammonite. On the outer whorl there are two distinct areas where the shell has been crushed on either side. This can only be as a result of a bite from a large reptile. The teeth marks are 2.5cm apart. This would suggest either a large Ichthyosaur or more likely a scavaging Crocodile. Superb example of evidence of predation.

Jurassic, Upper Toarcian.
Top of the cliffs at Eype near Bridport, Dorset.

Ammonite : 12.5cm. diam.
