GASTROLITH FROM A SAUROPOD - JURASSIC, COLORADO, U.S.A.

GASTROLITH (Stomach Stone), Sauropod.

The huge herbivorous Dinosaurs known as Sauropods spent all day grazing on tough vegetation. To aid the break up of this material they would swallow large numbers of stones. Over time these stones became rounded and took on a distinctive polish from the stomach acids. This is a particularly large fine example. At least four different Sauropods are recorded from the Morrison Formation of Colorado - Diplodocus, Camarosaurus, Apatosaurus and Branchiosaurus. Text book example.

Upper Jurassic, Morrison Formation.
