Pterygotus anglicus Agassiz.

Cut down 'tile' of green siltstone. On the upper surface is a purple coloured part of a body segment from a huge Eurypterid. Pterygotus anglicus were called 'Seraphims' by the old quarry workers. They could grow to a length of approx 6 feet. The 'wrinkled' surface is quite characteristic of certain parts of the body. Rare.

Lower Devonian, Lochkovian, Dundee Formation, Arbuthnott Group.
Carmyllie quarry near Arbroath, Angus, Scotland.

Eurypterid fragment : 4.7 x 3.3 cm.
