FISH SKULL - RED CRAG NODULE BED

Eothannus salmoneus

Old Victorian collection piece. A 3D fish skull preserved in a nodule. Found in one of the many 'coprolite' or phosphate pits dug in an around Ipswich from about the 1840s. These were used as a source for phosphates and ground for fertiliser (hence Fisons are based in Ipswich)/ The pits were hand dug and provided a wealth of vertebrate remain - all derived from the underlying London Clay and re-worked into the nodule beds in Pliocene times. All the pits are gone, so this kind of fossil cannot be collected or found anymore! Shows the operculum, lower jaw and various other bones. Stupidly rare!

Pliocene, Red Crag Nodule Bed, (derived from the Eocene, London Clay)
Waldringfield, Suffolk

Skull: 6.7 x 4.5 x 2.5 cm
