EURYPTERID SHOWING LIMBS AND 'PINCER' - SILURIAN, SCOTLAND.

Erretopterus (Pterygotus) bilobus Salter

Complete juvenile Eurypterid, still more or less articulated. At the head end some of the walking legs are evident as is one of the chelae or pincer like limbs which were used to kill the prey. These are rarely seen as they become detached on the death of the animal. A superb little Scottish Eurypterid at a very reasonable price. Found back in the early 1970's. All the classic Eurypterid sites around Lesmahagow now have protected status with all collecting prohibited. It is only 'old' time specimens like this that are still available.

Silurian, Wenlockian, Priesthill Group, Dunside Formation.
stream on the east flanks of grouse Hill, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Specimen:  8 cm. long.
