EURYPTERID FEEDING APPENDAGE - SILURIAN, SCOTLAND


Slimonia accuminata  Salter 1855

Piece of grey shale showing an almost entire endognath or feeding appendage from a giant Eurypterid. This species has three pairs of such limbs beneath the head shield. Shows the coxa or basal joint with 'teeth' joining the basos, the ischium, the meros, carpus and propodus. Missing only the terminal 'claw' which may be hidden under matrix. An extraordinary find. From a collection made in the early 1960s. Material like this is virtually impossible to obtain nowadays.
