ECHINOCORYS WITH TEETH DRAG MARKS - CRETACEOUS, GERMANY

Echinocorys cf. gravesii Desor 1847.

Matrix free complete Echinoid. On one surface are a series of 4 tooth drag marks. Each 0.2 cm diam and up to 2 cm. long. The marks are parallel and can only have been made by a shark, a large fish, or possibly a marine reptile. I would suspect it is just a shark having a little 'nibble'. Very unusual predation marks for an Echinoid. Not seen anything like it before. Interesting.

Cretaceous, Campanian.
Quarry Alemannia, Hover near Hanover, Germany.

Echinoid : 5 x 4 x 3.7 cm.
