DICTYOCARIS - A PROBLEMATICAL FOSSIL - SILURIAN, SCOTLAND.

Dictyocaris sp.

Dictyocaris is a problematical fossil in that no one is quite sure if it is a giant Arthropod or an algal mat. To complicate the issue it is always found associated with numerous round holes which have been attributed to sucker feeding marks from the jawless lamprey like primitive fish Jamoytius kerwoodi. Whatever it was it was big, flattened and was attractive in terms of feeding on!  A really strange fossil. Old collection piece.

Silurian, Wenlockian, Priesthill Group.
un named stream issuing off the east flank of Grouse Hill, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Specimen : 6 x 6 x 1cm.
