DACTYLIOCERAS SHOWING GROSS PATHOLOGY - JURASSIC, YORKSHIRE.

Dactylioceras cf. commune Sowerby.

A large fat Dactylioceras matrix free and developed to the center on both sides. The inner whorls have grown normally but half way round the final whorl and all the way to the termination the shell has progressively grown off kilter to one side. This type of pathology has prompted some authors to give a specific name to Dactylioceras which form like this but in all likelihood it is just a straightforward D. commune. these odd' hospital cases' are highly prized by certain collectors.

Jurassic, Upper Lias, Upper Toarcian.
Kettleness, Yorkshire.

Ammonite : 9cm. diam.
