Hyolithus sp.

Small piece of black shale. Along the centre are a group of about 20 Hyolithoid shells, all more or less aligned in the the same direction as they were moved around by currents on the sea floor. Hyolithoids are poorly understood animals that flourished in the lower Palaeozoic seas. Unusual.

Ordovician, Lower Llanvirn Series, Shales interbedded in the Stapeley Volcanics.
