CROCODILE - TIP OF SNOUT - WEALDEN , ISLE OF WIGHT.

Goniopholis sp.

Piece of black bone with three rounded tooth sockets. Two of the sockets have either an unerupted tooth or a worn tooth in them. The middle socket has no tooth. This is quite obviously the very tip of either the snout or the tip of the lower jaw from a crocodile. At least 7 different crocodiles are recorded from the Wealden of the Isle of Wight. This particular specimen corresponds more with Goniopholis in its general characteristics than any of the others. Such beach finds are not that common.

Cretaceous, Wealden, Wessex Formation.
Brook Bay, Isle of Wight

Specimen : 4 x 4.5 x 2cm..
