CONE LIKE STRUCTURE SURROUNDED WITH LEAVES ? - CARBONIFEROUS, FOREST OF DEAN.

Lepidostrobophyllum cf. atatum Boultner 1968.

A cone scale (sporophyll) from an arborescent lycopsid tree surrounded by leaf like lamina.  Preserved in sandstone. This rather unusually shaped plant somewhat resembles the leaf scar from the huge lycopod, Ulodendron majus Lindley & Hutton, 1831. Only the first one of these I have ever seen from the Forest Of Dean Coal Measures.

New fancy Coliiery, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire
Carboniferous, Westphalian, Coal Measures.
.
Specimen : 10 x 8 x 1.8cm.
