COMPLETE PLIOSAUR LIMB BONE - KIMMERIDGE CLAY, DORSET.

Pliosaur sp. indet.

Complete propodial ( femur or humerus ) from a giant marine reptile. With most Pliosaurs it is very difficult to distinguish the femur from the humerus as the bones are so similar. These massive pillar like bones supported the weight of the paddle and were needed as the paddles were responsible for all the swimming activity of the animal. Towards the extremity on one surface is a chisel shaped groove. this is almost certainly from the tooth of another Pliosaur.

Jurassic, Kimmeridge Clay.
Dredged from the Smallmouth Sands off Weymouth Harbour, Dorset.

Bone : 26cm. long.
