Cheiracanthus sp.

Palm sized piece of limestone with a complete Acanthodian from an old Victorian collection. The handwritten label says Cheiracanthus microlepidotus. This species is no longer valid. Has Both C. latus Egerton 1861 and C.murchisoni Agassiz 1835 are recorded from the locality given on the back of the specimen 'Lethen'. This is the famous fish site at Lethan Bar, Banffshire discovered in the late 1830's by J.Malcolmson. This site is long gone so fish from this locality are only available form old collections such as this one. The fish is pinkish white. Under magnification there is excellent detail of the scales and the fin support spines. The fish has assumed an 's' shape on death. Lethan Bar fish are virtually impossible to obtain. Real collector's piece.
