CEPHALASPID HEADSHIELD NEGATIVE - DEVONIAN, UKRAINE.

Stensiopelta pustulosa Janvier, 1985.

The negative of a virtually complete headshield from a Cephalaspid (Agnathan - primitive jawless fish.) Shows the horseshoe shaped outline. In the centre are the two close set eyes. The characteristic polygonal plates making up the surface of the headshield are particularly well defined and show up well under magnification. Most of the left head spine is there with the right one broken off where the matrix ends. A nice example of this strange fish.

Middle Devonian.
Nyrkiv, Zalispchyky region, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine.

Headshield : 5 cm. wide by 4cm long.
