BELEMNITE PHRAGMACONE IN GUARD - JURASSIC, CAMBRIDGESHIRE.

Cylindroteuthus puzosiana D'Orbigny.

The phragmacone of a Belemnite is a conical structure made up of a series of interlocking curved plates like watch glasses. It lies in the center of the Belemnite guard at the proximal end. It helps to act as a counterbalance to the weight of the animal when swimming. Perfect example of the relationship.

Jurassic, Callovian, Oxford Clay.
Dogsthorpe, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
