Solenopora jurassica Brown 1894.
Lovely example of a piece of 'Beetroot Stone'. This is colony of Stromatolites built up of layers of pale pink and cream. The colour comes from minerals dissolved in the algae. One face has been cut and polished to show the internal structure. Found way back in the early 1980's. The locality is now both a waste disposal depot and an SSSI. All collecting prohibited.
Jurassic, Bathonian.
Foss Cross Quarry, Calmsden, near Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
