Osteolepis macrolepidotus (Agassiz 1835)

Osteolepis belongs to a group of early fish known as Crossopterygians (lobe finned). These were the direct ancestors of the very first Amphibians. Beautifully preserved complete fish. Excellent detail of the skull bones, black scales, fins and tail. 

Middle Devonian, Eifelian, Sandwick Fish Bed.
Tronston, Orkney.

Fish : 14.5 cm long.
